Elizabeth Cady Stanton was born on November 12, 1815, and today we celebrate her legacy as a cornerstone of the women’s movement in the United States. Frustrated by the limited opportunities available to women, Stanton voiced her complaints during a gathering with friends. But on that pivotal day, those complaints transformed into decisive action.
She was instrumental in organizing the first women’s rights convention in 1848, where the demand for the right to vote was passionately articulated for the first time in an assembly.
Throughout her adult life, Stanton worked tirelessly alongside her close friend and fellow activist, Susan B. Anthony, championing women’s rights. She later made mistakes in her 50 years of advocacy, nevertheless, she started a movement.
In these uncertain times, it is essential to honor the women activists who paved the way before us. Like us, they faced frustrations and setbacks, yet their resilience and determination continue to inspire.

I am excited to participate in two upcoming events that honor the legacy of women’s rights pioneers and offer inspiration for today’s activists.
- Author Panel at Celebrating and Promoting Women
Join me at the first official meeting of Celebrating and Promoting Women on Thursday, November 14, from 8:34 to 10:45 a.m. at the new Gateway to Dream home in Mid-Rivers Mall. I will be part of an author panel where I will discuss my book, Borrowed Courage, which explores my discovery of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Additionally, I will share insights about publishing my memoir and essays on three pioneering figures of the 19th-century women’s rights movement. Let us all “borrow courage” from those who came before us.
